Rolling Stones article from CTV.CA

Rolling Stones rock Regina for the first time

Updated Sat. Oct. 7 2006 3:26 PM ET

Canadian Press

REGINA -- It's only rock 'n' roll but as the Stones rolled into Saskatchewan for the first time ever, the excitement had fans from far and wide hopping.

From the opening chords of Jumping Jack Flash, the band brought 40,000 fans from across Canada and many northern U.S. states to their feet at the first of two shows in Regina over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

"Someone told me, Regina, it rhymes with fun,'' said Mick Jagger, who had to dodge a bright pink bra tossed by an exuberant fan.

The veteran band's front man may be 63, but fans said Jagger and colleagues Ron Wood, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards could still work a stage.

"Mick still has the moves,'' said Regina resident Brenda Mcleish. "I thought that they'd be older and less movable, but no, no they've still got it going on.''

The steel stage rose 27 metres into the moonlit Prairie sky at Mosaic Stadium, home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders football team.

"It was awesome, the best concert I've ever seen,'' Mcleish said of Friday night's opening spectacle.

"The stage, the light show, the band, the crowd, it was amazing.''

Concertgoer Jessica Paul agreed.

"It was just phenomenal _ Mick in the big hat and he was just grooving,'' Paul said of Jagger's moves during the band's hit Sympathy for the Devil. "It was great.''

Richards got a laugh when he stepped up to the microphone, a cigarette dangling from his right hand and a cloud of smoke hovering around his head, to welcome fans.

''Good evening ladies,'' said Richards. And, after a pause, "and gentlemen, I presume.''

Many had wondered if Richards would light up on stage, given that the provincial Tobacco Control Act and a city smoking bylaw prohibit smoking in enclosed public places.

It's not clear how that would apply to Mosaic Stadium, which is an open-air facility.

Some fans who couldn't get into the sold-out stadium to see the boys up close lingered around the entrances, straining to catch a glimpse of the show.

Others forced area residents to take their own crowd control measures.

Mike Wesa, whose home is across the street from the stadium, had the benefit of a clear view of the show.

But he spent much of the night trying to keep fans off his property.

"A lot of people were trying to get up on my deck and in the trees in my yard, trying to see into the stadium,'' said Wesa.

"They were trying to climb on garages, sheds, trees, fences, trying to see into the concert.''

Still, Wesa said it was a great show and "a once in lifetime thing for Regina.''

City officials have said the Stones' two shows on Friday and Sunday were the biggest-ever concerts in Regina, and possibly in all of Saskatchewan.

Some 80,000 tickets were sold and the event was expected to bring in between $10 million and $15 million in direct tourism spending.

Long Weekend - Labour Day

Whew what a great long weekend There was sunshine, sunshine and more sunshine.  Friday morning I went go-kart racing with a few colleagues from work, we had a blast.  I spent the afternoon with my mom and nephew, always have a good time with them.  Saturday we spent the day with our cousins at their cabin, we had one of the BESTES days yet, we spent most of the day out on the lake in their boat and my cousin showed us how wakeboarding is supposed to be done, he is really really good.  Sunday we chilled out at home, cycled and enjoyed a sundowner by our fire-pit.  Today we chilled out again, played tennis and had a yummy BBQ.

Back to work tomorrow....and 4 more sleeps till I go on my holiday to the UK

We are having a GREAT summer.  Really havent been doing too much.....I mean not to much travelling etc.  We have been making the most of the fabulous weather by sitting on our deck, having bbq's and enjoying our firepit during the early evenings.   Every night we enjoy the late sun sets while playing tennis, walking around the neighbourhood or cycling through the forestry farm.

Right now I am watching the US Open, this will be Agassi's last tournament...........can you believe he has been playing for 21 YEARS...........he has gone from the wild boy of tennis to one of the most respected players.    I LOVE TENNIS

Work is busy for both Rowan and I, working hard BUT I have a short week to look forward to we have a 4 day weekend coming up

Happy Birthday Mishka

Today is my precious little fur-baby Mishka's 5th birthday
Of course in true Diva style she woke me up this morning and "demanded" that her and Kit Kat have their Chicken & Wild Rice before we left for work.  She loved her ladybug toy that vibrates around the floor

New Canadian Citizen

We are proud to announce that Rowan is now a fully fledged Canadian citizen.  On Wednesday August 2nd he pledged the citizen oath and received his citizenship card and certificate.  There were 66 new citizens from 28 different countries.  The ceremony was held at the auditorium at the downtown library.  I decided to take the oath at the same time, I had my citizenship from birth so I decided to take my oath with Rowan:)  I have added photos to the album of the ceremony.

This week

Wow this week sped by:

Monday night was so much fun I went to the Jazz Festival with my friend Wanda.  I had tickets from the Delta Bessborough to the Jacksoul and Divine Brown concert.  As guests of the Bessborough we had exclusive invites to the cocktail party on the balcony.  There was so much food that we practically rolled out of the hotel at the end of the evening oh and yes lots of free wine heheheheh.  Jacksoul was AWESOME and Divine Brown was FANTASTIC.

Tuesday I went to my first Basic Scrapbooking Class.  I had a blast we had to take 4 to 6 photos and by the end of the evening we had either created one or two pages.  I took some photos of my flowers that I got from Rowan a little while ago and the pages turned out quite nicely.  I plan to scan them and add them to my blog.

Wednesday was my 31st Bday, I LOVE my Bday.  I had a lovely day, a group of ladies from the office joined me in the park by the river for some FUN In the SUN we had yummy hotdogs and lemonade:)  That night Rowan and I went to the Sheraton for dinner and then enjoyed a walk along the river.  I was super spoilt with jewlery, candles, soaps, creams, perfumes AND.....................................a ticket to the UK for a 2 week vacation with my friend Cathy.

Thursday I stayed in and watched some more of my Doris Day movies

Tonight Friday I plan to do some blogging and stuff around my house as it is a long weekend the forecast is hot and sunny so I want to spend the rest of my weekend out and about.

Fabulous weekend

What a great weekend.  Friday night we had a BBQ at the Forestry Farm, planned by our Social Committee at work, it was also Free Day at the Zoo so we all got to see the newest visitor, a Bengal Tiger, she is visiting zoo's around the country.

Yesterday my sister, b-in-law, nephew and mom moved to a new house so we were busy all day with moving.  It was a glorious sunny day so it was no hassle at all.
Last night Rowan and I went to the Jazz Festival where we listened to great Jazz and were entertained by the one and only Little Richard.

Today was a WONDERFUL Day our artist put up the mural in our nursery, it is GORGEOUS (photos to follow), we did some gardening, played some tennis and visited my sis and family in their beautiful new home.

Photos updated

The photo album has been udpated with photos taken from Day 1 - Day 6 of our holiday to Vancouver.

Day 6 - Vancouver - Sunday, May 28th

Sadly our holiday had to come to an end.  At noon Jody-Brody adventure tours picked us up and we checked our luggage in at the station.  Then we went to a nifty organic restaurant in Jody and Scotts neighbourhood for brunch, we had a DELICIOUS meal.  Jody showed us the University of BC campus and some of the neighbourhoods around the campus.  Then we hung out at their apartment while we waited for Scott to get home from Whistler where he was playing hockey.

We had a farewell drink with Jody & Scott at the Cactus Bar (very cool bar) and then said our good-byes before boarding our train back to Saskatoon.

The trip back was unfortunately not so much fun, we were delayed at every stop and only got home at 3:30am on Tuesday May 30th, having eventually been delayed by 3 hours.

We had a BRILLIANT holiday and thanks to Jody-Brody adventure tours  and Val-Ron scenic tours we saw and did much more than we thought we would.

We hope that you all get a chance to holiday in BC, Vancouver and Victoria at some time.  They are definately great vacation spots.

The rest of my week was FAB I spent all my free time with my mom and my nephew Joshua.

Day 5 - Vancouver - Saturday, 26 May

Friday morning was spent at the Vancouver Aquarium.  Here we saw and watched the dolphin show, sea otters, Beluga whales, lots of tropical fish, sharks and we walked through the Amazon section and saw crocs, spiders, snakes, birds and turtles.

Later that day we walked through Gas Town, listened to the famous steam clock and did some shopping.

We had an interesting walk back to Granville Str. we walked up Hasting Str. past the "needle-park" where they hand out safe unused needles to addicts.  It was, I am not sure what word to use, upsetting is one word, to see so many home-less people and addicts.  There were people of all ages, all races and all sexes.  It is sad to see people so dependent on a drug or drugs that are destroying their lives.

On a lighter note, I was stopped in my tracks, when I saw a shop window full of.......Hooker Shoes.....I never knew you could get a whole shop of boots/shoes just like Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Women.  There were "plastic" boots in every colour and most of them were like thigh high in length and then there were Killer stilletto's.  Well that was a first for me I wondered where the shoes you see hookers wearing in movies come from and I wasnt even sure if they were just "movie" shoes I had no idea that there were whole shop of shoes like that.  No photo of the sighting I was too nervous to take out my camera not to mention to scared to stand and stare at the shop too long ahahahahahahah

We continued our walk up and down the downtown area and then we chilled out at our hotel and had dinner at the Irish Pub up the road.
